Art Style Development and Flexibility
I feel like my inspiration to draw as I was growing up always stemmed from my imagination with existing characters. I loved imagining how they’d look in new outfits, concepts, and poses, which became my main reason to believe character design might be a good option for me.
However, due to my love for existing characters, and my background in realism within traditional art, I found myself stuck at university with a strong skill of reproducing or imitating other styles, but no clear style of my own. It was thanks to the guidance of my tutors that I was able to begin my journey towards my own art identity. I was no longer just producing mindless copies, but began analysing which parts of the different art styles I agreed on and would alter.
A few months of hard work and many many unfinished drawings later, I saw a style beginning to form. An amalgamation of my strong skills in realism and my love for cartoon and comics - a style that felt close to that of classic graphic novels, but with a modern digital flair.
I still continue to refine my style to this day, but I believe this page will serve as a clear visual of how far I have come in the last two years.
